Story

Announced by Nicalis in the shadows of Tiny Babarian DX, Knight Terrors is a little endless runner coming to the Nintendo Switch for only a few bucks. Does its price reflect its quality?

Being an endless runner, Knight Terrors features a very simplistic gameplay, consisting of 2 buttons, jump and slash. The basic mode is pretty easy to get as well, kill all enemies before they hit the left side of the screen and don´t get hit yourself. Being divided into different “levels”, each level requires a certain point threshold to be met, in order to go into the next stage. These points can be reached by jumping over obstacles or simply killing enemies. Every stage then adds something new to the run, like a new enemy, new obstacles, higher speed and so on, pretty basic. Still, the base system works incredible well, due to its simplicity.

Along the typical endlessrunner mode, there are 4 other unlockable ones as well, like a flappy bird one and many more. The further we get in the main mode the more collectible powerups and modes are unlocked, providing some additional motivation besides the already good gameplay. Especially since the beginning can be quite a challenge to stay motivated because of the quickly rising difficulty curve and overload of new, unknown enemies.

Besides these modes, there isn´t much to Knight Terrors if its presentation wouldn´t be so damn great. Heavily inspired by the 8-bit era of sprites and simplistic visuals, it features crude characters and objects that fit surprisingly well to the overall dark, creepy theme of the game. They help to convey a gorgeous feeling of atmosphere while never being too overloaded to block the overview.

Knight Terrors is a little game with a little price, costing only a few bucks it offers a great endlessrunner experience for in between. Equipped with 5 modes in total, a simple to get gameplay and great looking sprites, it´s almost a no brainer if you desire a good endlessrunner for Nintendo´s little console.
