In light of the statements issued today by the New Zealand Government, Ministry of Health, and Motorsport New Zealand, we have no option but to cancel the Final Round of the Championship Series that was to be held at Masterton Motorplex this weekend.

This has not been an easy decision to make, and we have taken every scenario into account, including only have competitors and crew. However even this would push us over the threshold of the 'mass gathering' of 500 persons.
If you are a racer that has pre-entered and PAID your pre-entry fee, the Masterton Motorplex office will be in touch with you over the week to arrange a full refund of your pre-entry.
The 2019/2020 season of the National Drag Racing Championship has been hugely successful for the tracks, racers, spectators, volunteers and sponsors involved, and the Finals was shaping up to be a huge success.
To the track staff and volunteers of Ruapuna, Motueka, Masterton Motorplex, Taupo, Tokoroa and Meremere, thank you for all of your hard work this season, working with both a rulebook, and Championship Regulations. To all of the racers, crew, supporters and families that travelled near and far to make this season a success, we thank you all.
As per our previous statement, this now means that as a racer, if you were capped going into the Nationals, the cap will be removed, and your Nationals points will be added to your total to make this your final result. To those racers that were not capped, your Nationals points have already been added to your total, and this becomes your final result.
Points will be finalised and released by tomorrow.
The National Drag Racing Championship Committee, and both Governing Bodies thank each and every person involved in the running of the 2019/2020 Championship Season, and for your patience is these difficult times.
We are now welcoming feedback to be considered for the 2020/2021 season.

Please take the time to read the releases below from both the Ministry of Health and Motorsport New Zealand (MSNZ) that forced this decision to be made.
NZ Ministry of Health Release

On 16 March 2020, the Government advised public events or mass gatherings where 500 or more people are together in one place, at one time should be cancelled. Examples include concerts, festivals and sports matches.

This page was last updated 16 March 2020.

Why we are cancelling mass gatherings

New Zealand’s priority is slowing the spread of COVID-19. Mass gatherings such as concerts, sporting events and the like pose a high risk for transmission of infectious diseases.

Helping people avoid close contact with others as much as possible, like you would with the seasonal flu, is an effective measure to prevent the spread of COVID-19. These measures are intended to help protect you, your family and all of New Zealand from COVID-19.

Criteria for cancelling events

To slow the spread of COVID-19, gatherings of 500 people or more in close proximity will be cancelled. This includes festivals, fairs, sporting, religious and cultural events. This will be regularly reviewed.

The intent of the measures is to avoid non-essential gatherings which may facilitate the spread of COVID-19.

Motorsport NZ Statement regarding Coronavirus and MotorSport Events in New Zealand

March 16, 2020

MotorSport New Zealand has been in constant discussion at Board and Management level and wants to ensure adequate guidelines are given to the Motorsport community for the safety of all amid COVID-19. Our main objective is to ensure the health and safety of the MSNZ family while also putting things in place to ensure that the sport and life continues as best as possible. We continue to monitor the situation and will at all times adhere to government policy.

At this stage, all MSNZ permits issued remain valid and there is no requirement for events to be postponed or cancelled based on the following guidelines being adhered to.

  • No event shall take place with more than 500 people (including but not limited to competitors, crew, venue staff and spectators) in a confined space. For avoidance of doubt;
    • For events being held at a Circuit, no more than 500 persons are allowed inside the confines of the venue.
    • For Rally events, no more than 500 persons within a square kilometre
    • For Clubsport events, no more than 500 persons within a square kilometre

The Boards of IHRA NZ Inc and the New Zealand Drag Racing Association Inc have agreed to hold a joint National Drag Racing Series for the 2019/2020 season and for the 2020/2021 season.
